  A song sung by people of Jiang Xi about their top official Wang Zhe, who was able to relievepeople of a major drought by releasing innocent people wrongly convicted, thereby causing it torain. The words say that if there were to be ten Wang Zhe's in the world, there would becontinuous peace.

  A folk saying about the Jiu Xian ("Nine Fairy) Mountain Range. The words say that whenlooking at a certain angle, you see three ranges appearing and the other three hidden, and the lastthree are impossible to see.

  A song sung by people of Hu Zhou about their governor, Huo Bi Deng. They said:"We cannotlive one day without Mr. Huo."

  A folk saying concerning the great height and vareigated geography of Mount Tai Bai, which was said to have water within it.

  三秦記
  隴頭流水。鳴聲幽咽。遙望秦川。心肝斷絕。
  震關遙望。秦川如帶。
  Words said about a site, Long Xi, in the western border of China. People from central China often went up to a high military construction to look eastward to their home town. Some people were said to hvae cried to death there because of their extreme homesickness.

  心無憂患。不經二句。心若憂患。遠離三春。
  A saying about sea travel to the Roman Empire. If one has no worries in one's heart and meets tail winds, then one arrives there in twenty days. If one has worries in one's heart, then one cannot get there even in a few years' time.

  A song sung by Ning Qi to King Huan of the Qi kingdom. The words say that he is sorry not to meet a good king whom he could serve. King Huan employed him after hearing this song.

  A song sung by people of Cheng Wu about their mayor, who was praised as unique in his governing skill. He was able to save the people from mandatory labor and to eliminate robbery.

  A saying by the people of Guang Ling about Lu Chou's leadership, illustrated by his ability to make his subordinates behave.

  A folk saying about the transformation of the Pao Fish into a porcupine.

 黃牛灘行者語
  荊州記
  朝發黃牛。暮宿黃牛。三朝三暮。黃牛如故。
  Words said about a section of the Yang-tzi River gorge. One could start one's journey in the morning at Yellow Cow beach and would still be in the same place by nightfall. This could go on for three days and nights, so difficult is travel in the section of the river.
  
  盛弘之引楚諺

  洲不滿百。故不出王者。
  Since there are only ninety nine island in the rivers of the Jing Zhou area, no emperor will arise. This alludes to the conicidnece of Emperor Jiang Biao's emergence at the same time as the sudden appearance of an extra island. After his demise, that one hundredth island disappeared.

  The two cities, named Donkeys and Mills were built to attack the city of Wheat inbetween. The attack was a success.

  The clouds up in Tai Bai Mountain look as though they are emitting rain in the morning and evening.

  金馬門外聚群賢。銅駝街上集少年。
  Words said about two districts in the city of Luo Yang. All the intelligent people gather outside the Golden Horse Gate, and the adolescents gather on Bronze Camel Street.

  A folk saying about how people determine the price of rice. One shoots an arrow at a rock in a cave. If the arrow lands at a dark, shaded part of the rock, then the price of rice will be high.

  五蓋雪普。米賤如土。雪若不均。米貴如銀。
  A folk saying concerning how people predict the price of rice in the Five Peak Mountains area. If all of the five peaks are covered with snow, then the price of rice will be low.

  臘月有霧露。無水做酒醋。
  It there are fog and dew in the lunar month of December, then there will be a drought in the following year, so severe that there will be no water with which to make vinegar and wine.

  Words said about the location of Yao Fong Temple. It is high up in a mountain where a river's flood cannot possibly reach. There are thousands of people living up there, too.

  A folk saying concering Tin mountain. If there is mining of tin, there is war; if there is no mining of tin, there is peace.

  Words said by the intellectuals in the capital city of Luo Yang concerning their choice of burial sites, which were in the southeast coast of China.

  好男勿鞭春。好女勿看燈。
  Concerning customs of the Chinese new year in the Zhen Jiang area: on the first day of spring, men should not go to see the whipping of the cow,since they might be trampled to death by the crowd trying to catch pieces of the animal. Likewise, women should not go to the light show because of the crowd there.

  Words referring to the tiny creeks in the Yu Yang area. The flow of water in these creeks was so slow that it was hard to determine the origin and the end of the river.

  Words referring to the over ten thousand households residing around the Han River valley.

  水經注
  冬澇夏淨。斷官使命。
  Words said about two sections of the Han River. The two places had too little water in the winter and too much water in the summer, making sailing extremely difficult.

  陂汪汪。下田良。樊子失業庾公昌。
  Words said about a hilly area near a river. Originally the Fan households lived there, but later on, they lost the property to the Yu household.
  
  頭灘行者歌

  灘頭白勃堅相持。倏忽淪沒別無期。
  A song about a section of the Yang-Tzi River. The water in this section are so fierce that even fish and turtles can not swim there. It is easy to sink one's boat there, too.

  帆隨湘轉。望衡九面。
  Words referring to what one could see when traveling in one section of the Xiang River, where one could see nine different sides of Mount Heng.

  昭潭無底橘洲浮。
  One section of the Xiang River is adjacent to Mount Zhao, which has a very deep lake at its bottom. After that point, the Xiang River reaches the west of Nan Jin city, where the Ju island sits in the western portion of the river.

  Words referring to the place, from which the warlord Sun Quan of the Three Kingdom period would originate.

  A folk song sung by the native of Wu Ling expressing the pleasant feelings caused by the beautiful scenery of that area. The water, the mountain, the green forest, and the beautiful sunshine compose this song.

  If the sky is red like red rouge after the sun sets, then there will be either rain or wind arising.
  
  巴東三峽漁者歌

  巴東三峽巫峽長。猿鳴三聲淚沾裳。
  巴東三峽猿鳴悲。猿鳴三聲淚沾衣。
  A song sung by the fishermen in the Three Gorges area of the Yang-Tzi River. The gorges are so windy that it takes a long time to get through them. When people are sailing on the boat in these sections of the river, they could hear apes howling constantly. The song says that people are eager to get on dry land after hearing the apes' howling.

  A folk saying concerning the prosperity of three cities, Tai Ping Zhou, Wu Hu and Huang Chi. Among them, Huang Chi ranks as the most prosperous.

  Words said about the prosperity of the Yue Lu College in Hu Nan, which was ranked as the best during the Song dynasty.

  風吹鐵寶塔。水淹京口閘。
  A song sung about the Iron Tower of Zhen Jiang. The wind blew the tower off and the water flooded the dyke in Jing Kou.
  
  陳洄泛月扣舷歌

  吹玉簫兮弄明月。明月照兮頭成雪。頭成雪兮將奈何。
  白鷺起兮衝素波。
  A song sung by Chen Hui concerning the moon reflected in the water while he played the flute. The moon was so bright when it shone upon Chen's head, it was as though he had grey hair.

  Words said about the great Mount Qin which encompases two districts: Qin and Guo.
  
  京師為瑤光寺尼語
  洛陽伽藍記
  洛陽女兒急作髻。瑤光寺尼奪女婿。
  Some sarcastic remarks about the Buddhist nuns in Yao Guang Temple after some nuns were raped by military men of a foreign tribe during the invasion of Luo Yang. The girls in the City of Luo Yang were eager to style their hair for their wedding, yet the nuns from Yao Guang Temple snatched their grooms.

  Words referring to a snobbish custom that Qing Zhou has always had, which its govenor would have to know before starting his job.

  伊洛鯉魴。貴於牛羊。
  The carp from the Luo River and the fresh water bream from the Yi River are more of a delicacy then beef or mutton.

  One of the sweet and huge grapes grown in the White Horse Temple is worth a cow.

  Words said by wandering martial men about the wine that Liu Bai Duo brewed. One is not afraid of streching a bow or using a knife, but one is afaid of drinking Liu Bai Duo's wine, since drinking it could knock people unconscious for a whole month.

He then asked the servantmaid to masquerade herself as an old beggar and play her flute in the area where the Qiang bandits were. These Qiang bandits were all moved by the music and decided to become good citizens.

  A song sung by people of the Wei dynasty concerning a northeast area of the City of Luo Yang. A group of people, descendants of the ancient Shang dyansty, lived there and made pottery for their living. The chased away people who were not their kind and wanted to live there.

  恨難得兮仰天悲。
  A song sung by Zhang Han, who served as an official for Prince Qi. One day when he was in the capital and the autumn wind started to blow, he sang this song to express his feelings for the autumn landscape and the fish in the Wu River. This made him homesick, and he decided that since he was not happy with his job anyway, he would quit and go home.

  A short children's song in the Wu area. It correctly predicted the wrongful accusation, due to a political struggle in the court, of illegal minting by Zhang Yan. Before this time, the Wu area had not seen turmoil of any kind for over three hundred years.

  Two songs sung by the bandits in southern China, who held an uprising against the central government during the Wan Li era of the Ming dynasty. The words are expressing the advantage of having a very mountanous region to hide in.
